Target on 04/30/09

Guess what!  We had another mesmerizing Target day.  Please try to figure out this week's vocabulary words from our blog.  Last Target day's words were fervor and wad.  Fervor means that you have a real zeal for something.  A wad is a small compressed mass of material.  Here is something more exciting!  We have finally finished Time Traveling.  One group stayed in the Ancient Americas.  The other two groups zigzagged through time to go to India and China.  One group split up again.  Please remember to turn in your final time travel journals next week.

Above and Beyond presentations took up a lot of our time. There were eleven presentations this week.   They were about pioneer days, popcorn, Bill Gates, mutant animals, the Arch, King Tut, Mount Fuji, water, Mr. Potato Head, aborigines and Lois Lowry.  We have only two weeks left in Target this year to finish presenting Above and Beyond projects.

Even though we tried not to avert it, we did not have time to finish our book discussion.  We will do that next week.

Remember to bring your signed Target Tally, your Target supplies, a nutritious snack and a water bottle.  There are only two more weeks of Target.

Target on 04/16/09

We are going to make our blog a little different today.  We will begin with the last thing we did and go to the first thing.  Lastly, we did our Target Tally.  We can't wait for you to read our comments.  Second to last, we created this weird blog.  Even though it is backwards to forwards, we still have fervor for our blog.  Guess what?  We also did Hands On Equations today.  It was some people's first time doing Hands On Equations by themselves and for others it was a review.  There was one Above and Beyond presentation today.  It was about pasta.  Yummy!  Speaking of yummy, today was someone's birthday and she brought munchkins (the doughnut kind!).  Before that, we traveled through space and time to another ancient civilization.  We made our tourist group larger by splitting a group and one large group went to China and the other went to India.  The fourth group went to the Ancient Americas.  Don't wad your time travel journal up if you get stressed out because we have two weeks before we need to turn them in.  You may ask why, well, we are having our book discussion on The Egypt Game after the CRCT.  Make sure you finish reading the book.  We created two Vocabulary Cartoon cards.  Can you find the words in our blog?

We have such a fervor for Target!

Next week, the only thing you need to bring is your book and your good attitude plus your good-looking smile!

It's a bird!  It''s a plane!  It's another fabulous Target day!  We started off with some wonderful vocabulary words.  Can you find them in our blog?  Did you guess our words from last week?  They were fowl and succor.  Succor means to give assistance or help.  Fowl means a bird that we hunt or raise for food like chicken or turkey.

Next we traveled through time to our new destinations.  Well, except for the people that stayed in the Ancient Americas.  We prevailed in doing our time travel journals.  In Ancient China only rich boys got to go to school.  The Ancient Chinese wrote on animal bones to tell the future.  Some Ancient Romans had a rain pool in their house.  Ancient Mesopotamians put more than one skeleton in a sarcophagus.  In the Ancient Americas, people would sacrifice themselves to the gods.  When the king or queen died in Babylon then their servants would drink poison and die with them.  We have learned so many facts that we can't tell you all of them.

We had to prevail on Mrs. Lyjak to do Hands On Equations.  We learned that Hands On Equations helps us with algebra.  We learned about legal moves which means that what you do to one side of the equation, you have to do to the other.  It's really easy, even a runt can do it.

We watched one very tasty Above and Beyond presentation about pumpkins and ate pumpkin muffins.  Happy Halloween!  Or it seems like it after the Above and Beyond.

Remember your signed Target Tally, binder, book, water bottle and a nutritious snack.  We have five weeks to complete our Above and Beyond presentations.  We will have our book discussion on The Egypt Game in three weeks.  Don't forget to bring your big, fat, cheesy smile!

Target on 03/26/09

Today we had an absolutely, wonderful, spectacular day in Target.  Why?  Because we started a new unit on Vocabulary Cartoons.  Yay!  Last week's words... wait! We didn't have any words last week.  Even better, we got a new book to read over next month called The Egypt Game.  So far, it is awesome!

This week's words were... Oh yeah!  You need to guess them because they are concealed in our blog.   We won't provide succor to you even if you give up trying to find them.

Five, four, three, two, one! Poof!  We're gone!  We were time-traveling to ancient civilizations.  The civilizations we visited this week were Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome and the Ancient Mesoamericas.  We learned that ancient Mesopotamians wrote with pictures.  When it comes to buildings, ancient Rome outfoxed other civilizations.  The Romans ate fowl at their feasts.  So let's have fowl for dinner like the Romans.

Remember to bring your Target binder, completed time-travel journal and math packet (we may need succor with our math packet), The Egypt Game, a snack and water bottle.

Target on 03/19/09

We started Target off at 9AM because we had an awesome in-house field trip.  We learned that the Ancient Peruvians buried their mummies in the position of how you were in your mother's womb.  When people are buried the things that are buried with them and facing away from them are there to protect them.  If the things are facing towards them, they are there for them to use in the afterlife.  They also believed that if you called a person's name they would have to come back from their journey to the afterlife.  Then they threw dirt over the person's body.  Wow!  The Ancient Peruvians sure were interesting.

Guess what?  We time-traveled again.  We are becoming true archaeologists with our time travel.  Most of us started a new civilization.  All of the cultures have a belief in gods and goddesses.  Some of them believe in demons and monsters.  Egyptians had pharaohs that they believed became gods.  The Ancient Americans believed in spirits and had emperors.  These are a few examples of what we have learned.  We have actually learned much more.

Remember to bring your signed Target Tally, your Target binder and your completed time-travel journal and math packet.  Bring a water bottle, a nutritious snack and a big chubby smile.

Target on 03/12/09

This Target week was a blast!  We visited the Science Fair and saw all of the awesome projects.  Some people in our class enrolled in the Science Fair for one of their Above and Beyond projects.  Some of the Science Fair projects were really cool, such as the ones about lava, tornados, starch, solar energy, plants, and many more.

We blasted through time to a new ancient civilization.  We learned that in Mesopotamia lots of people conquered and were conquered so there were several cultures.  We also learned that the Mayan king would sacrifice some of his blood for the gods.  The Aztecs sometimes ate hairless dogs.  Jupiter was the king of the Roman gods.  As you can see, we have learned many things from our time traveling today.

Holy cow!  We overflowed with lots of Above and Beyond presentations.  Our Above and Beyond presentations were about sea turtles, Michigan, the Terracotta Army, Korea, edamame, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Amazingly Inventive Inventions, and Fred Figglehorn.  The projects were awesome, fantastic and superb.

Remember to bring your Target binder, your time-travel journal and math packet, signed Target Tally, a water bottle and a nutritious snack.  Bring a happy smile!

Target on 03/05/09

We started off our Target day with a kick!  Guess what?  We played Vocabulary Jeopardy, and we used clickers to mark our answers on our Vocabulary quiz.  R2D2 was a big help when it came to marking our answers.  Every student did very well on the quiz.

Today most of the class time-traveled to a different ancient civilization except for the people who were studying the Mesoamericans.  People in ancient Greece had wine and bread for breakfast even children.  In ancient Rome women had the right to divorce.  Mayan people took a bath twice a day.  We can't wait to time travel to our next ancient civilization and begin our work as archaeologists (again).

Next we went above and beyond on our Above and Beyond presentations.  There were very interesting and tasty subjects.  We learned about potato chips, Japan, sea horses and The Little Mermaid.  We only have one more week to present Above and Beyond projects for this nine weeks.

Remember to bring your Target binder, a signed Target Tally, a water bottle, and a healthy and nutritious snack or two.  Finally, bring a great attitude and a big cheesy smile.

Target on 02/26/09

You would not believe how much fun Target was today.  The coolest thing was time traveling to ancient civilizations.  Mrs. Lyjak enrolled us in our tour groups for our ancient civilizations.  Creating our time travel journals was difficult but we ambled through.  Most of us still need to work on our journals for homework.  We also need to evaluate our journals using our rubrics.  We started the day with vocabulary cartoons.  Did you guess our words from last week?  They were remainder and endorse.  This week we finished our fleet of vocabulary words so we have a vocabulary quiz and will play Vocabulary Jeopardy next week.  Don't forget to study vocabulary words.

We overflowed with Above and Beyond presentations.  If you need another Above and Beyond project you can enroll in the Science Fair.  Our presentations were about subjects like global warming, donuts, platypuses, porcupines, a poem writer, and horses.  Remember that we only have two more weeks to present Above and Beyond projects.

Remember to bring your Target binder, a nutritious snack, a water bottle, a signed Target Tally and, finally, a big, huge, happy smile!

Turn your attention to this blog because we had an amazing Target day.  We started with vocabulary cartoon cards.  Can you find the words in our blog?  Don't carp if you can't find them in our blog.  Next we finished taking the stratigraphy test.  We learned how to use layers of soil to determine whether an object was older or younger than some other artifact. Some of the stratigraphy diagrams made our brains think a little more until we felt like our brains were afloat.  We also created a time travel rubric to use when we begin our time travel next week.  We are becoming better and better archaeologists every week.

Remember to bring your Target binder, signed Target Tally, a water bottle and a nutritious snack.  Continue to work on your two Above and Beyond projects that are due this nine weeks.

Target on 1/22/09

Do you ever wonder what people will think about us 2000 years in the future?  They might think that toilet seats are sacred collars and toilet bowls are sacred urns.  We read a book called Motel of the Mysteries where people in the future find a motel from our time and make wild inferences.  An inference is a guess based on what you already know.  We also made some inferences about artifacts from Mrs. Lyjak's childhood and things she found at her grandmother's house.  We learned that it was hard to get our inferences correct.  For example, a small plastic artifact that looked like a stencil was actually used to put in the center of a record so the record player could play the song.

Vocabulary Cartoons were awesome and cool.  Our class was hypnotized by Mrs. Lyjak to complete our vocabulary cartoon cards.  We dovetailed our ideas to make this blog.

Bring your signed Target Tally, binder, water bottle and healthy snack.  Start working on your two Above and Beyond projects that are due this nine weeks.  And, of course, bring your smile!
